OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Hundreds gathered Friday to remember the late grandson of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X as mourners said Malcolm Shabazz was well on his way to cementing his own legacy.

More than 200 people attended a traditional Islamic service in Oakland for the 28-year-old Shabazz, who authorities say was beaten to death last week over a $1,200 bar bill in Mexico City.

The service, which lasted more than two hours, featured plenty of prayer, songs, spoken word and tears. Many among the procession of speakers said while they initially connected with Shabazz because of his famous grandfather, they learned to appreciate a man they called "Young Malcolm" as a leader in his own right.

"If I could put into one word how I feel about Malcolm, it would be, 'inspiration,'" Hussein Mekki, 32, of Houston, Texas, told fellow mourners. "Hopefully that will continue, and he can inspire us for the rest of our lives."

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — In five years, Sherry West has lost two sons to unspeakable violence.

The Georgia mother was grieving from Thursday's shooting death of her 13-month-old son in his stroller during an attempted robbery while they took a morning stroll. In 2008, her 18-year-old son was stabbed in an altercation in New Jersey.

A pair of teenagers was arrested Friday in the most recent shooting. West had just been to the post office a few blocks from her apartment Thursday morning and was pushing her son, Antonio, in his stroller while they walked past gnarled oak trees and blooming azaleas in the coastal city of Brunswick.

A vigil that would have taken place on Tuesday in Florida has been cancelled. According to USA Today, a vigil scheduled today in Palm Bay to mark the life of Trayvon Martin was canceled, because of safety concerns just hours before it was scheduled to start.

Trayvon Martin would have turned 18 on Tuesday.

According to a statement from event sponsor Fathers Stand Up, concerns that the event might have been taken out of context by the community were part of the reason for canceling the vigil.

Event organizer John P. Francois, founder of Fathers Stand Up, said there was "a lot of stuff that I heard that might occur" during the vigil, which was set for 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at Palm Bay City Hall. He said he canceled because, "I don't want to see anybody get hurt on my watch."

They say you have to be careful for what you asked or be ready to suffer the consequences for your own actions. Now, an Applebee's waitress is learning the hard way after a pastor left a message about "God" on a receipt and she posted it publicily

A waitress at a St. Louis-area Applebee's who shared a photo of a receipt that showed an auto-tip scratched out in favor of no tip at all was fired Wednesday by the restaurant chain after the pastor who signed the receipt complained to her manager.

According to the Examiner, a waitress named Chelsea Welch hadn't even served the Alois Bell and her party of eight, but when a workmate showed her the receipt which Bell scratched out the $6 auto-tip in favor of no tip and the note "I only give God 10 percent. Why do you get 18?" she snapped a photo of it and posted it to Reddit's Atheist page. Reddit users were able to determine Bell's identity from her signature and good old-fashioned Google stalking.

But, it looks like the joke was on her. According to Welch she posted the receipt as "a lighthearted joke."

The rapper from Vallejo, CA, whose real name is Michael Lott, but performs as "Miami the Most" has been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service for national drug-trafficking.

According to the Mercury News, authorities have been hunting for months for Lott and finally arrested him on Thursday in Las Vegas.

Federal authorities believe Lott, a close associate of Vallejo rapper Mac Dre (Andre Hicks), who was shot to death in Kansas City in November, 2004, was involved in a drug trafficking organization that netted some 25 arrests earlier this year after a four-year investigation. At least 16 of those arrested were Vallejo residents, mostly Vallejo-based rappers and associates of Mac Dre's Thizz Entertainment recording label, officials said.

Agents arrested people in Vallejo, Stockton, Fairfield, Oakland, Los Angeles, New York, and Oklahoma City. Four of the Vallejo residents arrested included Lawrence Kennedy Nelson, 42, Eric Lesean Robinson, 42, Narco McFarland, Sr., 43 and Major Norton, III, 37.
