SUNSCREEN INSERT FOR DAVE1

ATLANTA — A Cobb County woman has a warning after trying to protect her skin cost her an electronic book reader.  "I got my Nook out of its case and the whole back of it was melted," Jodie Brookfield told Channel 2's Jim Strickland. Brookfield said the chemicals in her spray sunscreen damaged her Nook e-reader. She said she used the spray on her vacation but later realized it ate away at the device, right where she picked it up.

"This was a birthday present, and it's less than two weeks old," Brookfield said.A tiny warning on the can reads it can damage some fabrics materials or surfaces.

Strickland bought the same Walgreens brand of sunscreen and sprayed some sunglasses. In a few hours, the glass frames fell apart. Brookfield said she had concerns about long-term effects on skin, but a dermatologist said there's no need to worry.

"Skin is not plastic. Those sunscreens have all been well-tested in laboratories to make sure that they're safe and that they're effective," said dermatologist Rutledge Forney.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.improved to 43-0 with a unanimous decision over Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto (37-3) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Mayweather, who is 35 and facing a June 1 jail sentence on a domestic violence case, remains in line for a super-fight against Manny Pacquiao after serving his time.

Cotto was trying to revitalize himself following the hard-handed loss to Antonio Margarito in 2008, a knockout loss to Pacquiao in 2009 and the death of his father, Miguel Sr., in 2010. He avenged the loss to Margarito in December, but could not overcome his unbeaten opponent on Saturday.

Thirteen people were charged Wednesday for their roles in the hazing death of a Florida A&M University drum major who was severely beaten in what appears to be one of the biggest college hazing cases ever.

The charges were announced more than five months after 26-year-old Robert Champion died aboard a chartered bus parked outside an Orlando hotel following a performance against a rival school. The case has exposed a harsh tradition among marching bands at some colleges around the U.S.

Champion was severely beaten by band members in November and had with bruises on his chest, arms, shoulder and back, authorities said. Witnesses told emergency dispatchers Champion was vomiting before he was found unresponsive aboard the bus.

State Attorney Lawson Lamar said 11 of the 13 people will face a hazing resulting in death charge, a third-degree felony. If convicted, they could face up to nearly six years in prison. The other two people will face a misdemeanor charges. In a separate incident at FAMU, three people were charged after alleged hazing ceremonies Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. That's when Bria Shante Hunter said her legs were beaten with fists and a metal ruler to initiate her into the "Red Dawg Order," a band clique for students who hail from Georgia.

Facebook announced plans Tuesday to encourage its 161 million members to add their organ donor status to their Timelines. With more than 114,000 people waiting for hearts, livers and kidneys and other organs in the United States, someone dies every four hours waiting for a transplant, according to Johns Hopkins University transplant experts, who were involved in brainstorming the idea.

Dr. Andrew Cameron, a transplant surgeon, said in a statement that he expects the new status option will encourage conversation about organ donation -- and inspire more people to become donors. He also predicts it will help make people's wishes more clear to their loved ones, in case of an unexpected accident.

"I can't tell you how many times a family, faced with the death of a loved one, says they wished they had asked about organ donation before that person died," Cameron said.

According to statistics, an average of 18 people will die per day waiting for an organ donation -- not because medical technology is lacking, but rather, because there are not enough donors.

Baltimore police said they have arrested a man in the death of a North Carolina teenager whose body was found in a river after she vanished in 2010 while visiting relatives in the area.

A man he identified as Michael Johnson has been arrested in the death of 16-year-old Phylicia Barnes, of Monroe, N.C., police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told The Associated Press early Thursday. Authorities have said Johnson was the former boyfriend of Barnes' older sister and the last person to see her alive.

Guglielmi said prosecutors would release more information later Thursday on the arrest.

Barnes was visiting her older half-siblings in Baltimore when she disappeared Dec. 28, 2010. Workers at the Conowingo Dam on the Susquehanna River found her body the following April in northeast Maryland. Medical examiners later ruled the death a homicide.
